Being able to move around safely and independently is something many of us take for granted. For people living with disabilities or mobility difficulties, the right equipment can make an enormous difference to their everyday lives and their ability to take part in family and community activities.

We have been fortunate to provide a number of mobility aids to people who needed additional support. One of these was a specially adapted pushchair for an autistic child over the age of 10. The request came from a mother who has a disabled husband as well as several other children to care for.

The adapted pushchair was particularly important for family outings. It allowed her autistic child to be safely secured when necessary, as the child had a tendency to run away, while also enabling the mother to keep a closer eye on the rest of her family. This simple but essential piece of equipment gave the whole family greater freedom and reassurance when spending time together outside the home.

We also supplied a mobility scooter to a disabled lady who had been unable to leave her house. Having access to the scooter gave her the opportunity to get out and about again, helping to restore some of her independence and connection with the wider community.

In another case, we helped a lady who needed modifications to her electric wheelchair. The work cost £1,125.00. Although she had been provided with a wheelchair through the PIP scheme, the necessary modifications were not covered. We were therefore able to step in and provide the financial assistance needed to make the wheelchair suitable for her individual requirements.

As well as donating mobility equipment, we also offer a valuable temporary lending service from the shop. We are able to lend wheelchairs and other mobility aids to people who need them for a limited period. This can be particularly helpful for someone recovering from an illness or injury, waiting for their own equipment to be provided, or requiring additional support for a short-term change in circumstances. By lending equipment on a temporary basis, we can provide practical help when it is needed most, without the person having to purchase an item they may only need for a short time.

Every piece of mobility equipment we provide, whether through donation or temporary loan, has the potential to make a real difference. Whether it helps someone leave their home, spend time with their family, recover from an injury or regain a little independence, we are proud to play a part in helping people live their lives with greater freedom, confidence and dignity.
